Connor Franta will never let Daya down!
Just hours after the 2017 Grammy Award nominations were announced, the vlogger-writer sat down with PEOPLE Now to discuss his dear friend’s hard-earned victory.
“I freaked out,” Franta, 24, says of hearing that Daya had just been nominated for her first Grammy (she’s up for Best Dance Recording for her track “Don’t Let Me Down” with The Chainsmokers).”I was texting my friend and I was like, ‘Oh my God, am I reading this correctly?’”
He then shared a special congratulatory message to the newly-minted Grammy nominee: “I’m very proud of you — and text me. Let’s hang!”
The pair met through a mutual friend — one of Daya’s songwriters — and the rest is history. In fact, Franta was invited into the studio to exclusively preview some of Daya’s chart-topping tracks before they were released.
“The surprise to know about me and Daya’s relationship is that I heard all the music way before it was out,” he reveals. “Like the Grammy nominated song — I heard it well before it was out and I was like, ‘This is gonna be a hit.’”
Don’t miss the 59th Grammy Awards Feb. 12 on CBS.
You may know Connor Franta from his YouTube or Instagram channels — each of which have over 5 million followers. (Reminder: He won “Favorite YouTube Star” at this year’s Teen Choice Awards.) But now, the 24-year-old entrepreneur is making a name for himself in the fashion world, with a new collaboration between Urban Outfitters and his own line, Common Culture which launched Wednesday.
“My brand Common Culture is collaborating with Urban Outfitters,” Franta tells PEOPLE about the partnership. “I’ve been a big fan of Urban Outfitters for a long time and it was always kind of like the epitome of fashion growing up in small-town Minnesota, so to work with them is a total dream, and it just came about about 6-8 months ago. It was one of those things that just got us both in the room. I was like, ‘get us both in the room, and we’ll figure out a way to collaborate.’”
And so they did! All proceeds from Franta’s line, which consists of a t-shirt, two sweatshirts and two baseball caps, will be donated to GLSEN, a non-profit organization championing LGBTQ youth in schools. And the pieces are selling quickly, so make sure head over to Urban Outfitters before they’re sold out.
I’m fine and thankful for that. Please drive safely everyone x
